India's largest oil refining company has secured a substantial long-term liquefied petroleum gas supply contract with a regional partner, diversifying its energy procurement strategy amid ongoing geopolitical complexities in the Middle East.
Under the agreement, Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) will import between 45,000 and 55,000 tonnes of LPG each month from the partner nation. The deal represents a strategic move to strengthen India's energy security and reduce dependence on traditional supply sources, particularly those routed through contested maritime corridors.
The arrangement comes as global oil majors navigate shifting supply chains and geopolitical tensions affecting major energy shipping routes. By establishing stable, long-term sourcing agreements with regional suppliers, Indian refiners aim to ensure consistent fuel availability for the domestic market while managing price volatility.
The monthly import volumes under this agreement would contribute meaningfully to meeting India's growing LPG demand, which has expanded significantly as consumption increases across domestic, industrial, and automotive sectors. LPG remains a crucial energy source for households, cooking fuel distribution networks, and industrial applications across the country.
Experts view such bilateral energy partnerships as beneficial for India's energy diplomacy, fostering closer economic ties with neighbouring nations while supporting New Delhi's broader objectives of energy security and supply chain resilience.
