India's Trade Pacts to Unlock $85 Trillion Market, Minister Says

India's trade portfolio has undergone a dramatic transformation, with preferential market access expanding from $10 trillion in 2014 to $85 trillion across multiple trade partnerships, according to Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal.

Speaking at the 4th Edition Festival of Ideas, Goyal outlined the government's accelerated trade negotiation strategy. Over the past four and a half years, New Delhi has concluded nine free trade agreements (FTAs) covering 38 developed nations with a combined GDP of $60 trillion. An additional seven to eight agreements under negotiation are expected to add another $15 trillion in market access.

Together, the agreements represent approximately 76 percent of global GDP, Goyal noted. He called on Indian businesses to seize the opportunity presented by these market openings, urging companies to expand beyond the domestic market and establish stronger international footholds.

"Industry should look beyond the huge domestic market and step out of its comfort zone to expand globally," Goyal said. The minister's remarks underscore the government's push to integrate Indian businesses into global value chains and boost merchandise and services exports across developed economies.
