Wholesale inflation in India climbed to 9.92% in August, marking a notable increase from the previous month as commodity prices continued to edge upward across multiple sectors. The Wholesale Price Index for all commodities advanced to 110.8 from 110.0 in July, reflecting persistent inflationary pressures in the economy.
Fuel and power inflation emerged as a primary driver of the overall increase, surging to 22.93% in August from 20.05% in July. This uptick reflected higher crude oil prices and increased energy demand as the summer season persisted. Simultaneously, inflation in manufactured products also accelerated, adding to broad-based price pressures across the industrial sector.
Food inflation remained a secondary concern, with agricultural commodity prices continuing to exert upward pressure on the wholesale index. The combination of higher input costs, elevated fuel expenses, and seasonal factors in food production contributed to the elevated inflation reading.
The acceleration in wholesale inflation comes amid ongoing concerns about retail price pressures filtering through the economy. Policymakers continue to monitor the situation closely as they balance growth considerations against price stability objectives.
