India's wholesale inflation seen breaching 12% in October

Wholesale price inflation in India is expected to climb above 12 per cent in October, marking a significant uptick in price pressures across the economy, according to India Ratings and Research. The rating agency also projects consumer price inflation to breach the 6 per cent mark during the same month, signalling intensifying inflationary headwinds for Indian households and businesses.

The dual surge in inflation metrics reflects a confluence of structural and cyclical factors weighing on India's price environment. Adverse base effects—particularly the comparison with exceptionally low inflation readings from the corresponding period last year—are amplifying year-on-year inflation readings. Additionally, unfavourable weather conditions have constrained agricultural output and supply chains, limiting the availability of essential commodities and supporting price increases.

Rising international energy prices are also contributing meaningfully to the inflationary trajectory. Higher crude oil costs translate into elevated transportation and production expenses, which ultimately flow through to consumer prices across both wholesale and retail channels. The cumulative effect of these pressures is expected to keep inflation well above the Reserve Bank of India's medium-term tolerance band in the near term.

The projections underscore persistent challenges for monetary policymakers as they balance growth considerations against price stability objectives. Markets will closely monitor actual inflation data releases alongside the central bank's forthcoming policy decisions.
