India's wholesale inflation surges to 11.39% amid fuel and food pressures

India's wholesale inflation gauge climbed to double digits in September as energy and food costs intensified pressure on producers across the economy. The wholesale price index jumped 1.47 percentage points from the previous month, signalling a marked deterioration in price pressures at the manufacturing and supply levels.

Fuel and power categories emerged as primary drivers of the inflationary spike, with energy prices rising significantly during the month. Simultaneously, food inflation accelerated, adding to the upward momentum in the wholesale basket. The combination of these factors pushed factory-gate prices higher across numerous industrial segments, indicating that cost pressures are spreading beyond isolated pockets.

The acceleration in wholesale inflation comes as policymakers monitor price trends across the economy. Higher input costs at the wholesale level often presage consumer price pressures, as manufacturers and retailers adjust retail prices to reflect their rising procurement expenses. The broad-based nature of the September increase, spanning energy, food and industrial output, suggests cost pressures are widening across the supply chain.
