India's women's hockey team advances to Asian Games semifinal with dominant win

The Indian women's hockey team topped Pool B with an unblemished five wins from as many matches after dismantling Singapore in their final group stage encounter at the Asian Games here. Sunelita Toppo's clinical brace formed the cornerstone of India's emphatic performance, with captain Salima Tete also finding the net alongside Lalremsiami, Rutuja Dadoso Pisal, Nikki Pradhan and Deepika. Tete opened India's account in the 17th minute, before Toppo doubled the advantage with strikes in the 22nd and 24th minutes. India's remaining goals came through Lalremsiami (26th), Pisal (29th), Pradhan (35th) and Deepika (55th).

Despite the lopsided scoreline, Singapore mounted spirited resistance in the opening quarter, keeping the Indian forwards at bay through resolute penalty corner defence. The hosts' defensive discipline proved particularly noteworthy, frustrating India by denying them conversion opportunities from eight penalty corner attempts. Nevertheless, India's sustained offensive pressure and superior execution ultimately overwhelmed their opponents as play remained concentrated in Singapore's half throughout the encounter.

India will face South Korea in the women's hockey semifinal scheduled for September 30. In the other semifinal, defending champions China—also the reigning Olympic silver medallists—will take on hosts Japan in a highly anticipated encounter.
