India seeks to deepen trade, energy partnership with Azerbaijan

India is looking to expand its economic and strategic footprint in Azerbaijan, with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar holding talks with Azerbaijani leadership in the capital Baku. The visit represents a significant effort to reinvigorate the bilateral relationship and unlock opportunities across trade, energy, investment, tourism and regional connectivity.

Jaishankar's engagement comes at a time when India is actively diversifying its energy partnerships and seeking new markets for its goods and services. Azerbaijan, a key energy producer in the Caucasus region, holds particular strategic importance for New Delhi's efforts to secure stable energy supplies and expand economic cooperation in South and Southeast Asia's extended neighbourhood.

The talks are expected to explore avenues for strengthening commercial ties, particularly in the energy sector where Azerbaijan plays a significant role as a supplier. Both nations are also likely to discuss investment opportunities and ways to enhance people-to-people contact through tourism and cultural exchanges.

The visit also underscores India's broader diplomatic strategy to maintain active engagement with key regional partners and consolidate relationships that serve its strategic interests. Enhanced connectivity initiatives and regional cooperation frameworks are expected to feature prominently in the discussions, reflecting New Delhi's commitment to deepening ties across the region.
