India's decision to ease foreign direct investment norms for land-bordering nations has triggered a substantial surge in foreign capital commitments, according to government sources. Nearly Rs 4,900 crore has been pledged across key growth sectors since the policy adjustment in May, with artificial intelligence, data centre infrastructure and manufacturing emerging as primary investment destinations.
The relaxation of FDI screening requirements, formally known as the Press Note 3 (PN3) easing, was introduced to streamline investment approvals while maintaining national security safeguards. The measure has proven effective in attracting technology-focused ventures and infrastructure projects that align with India's digital transformation agenda.
Data centres have captured particular investor interest amid soaring global demand for cloud computing and AI infrastructure. Manufacturing commitments, meanwhile, reflect international confidence in India's production capabilities and efforts to establish itself as an alternative to China-dependent supply chains. The AI sector has also witnessed accelerated investment as companies seek to establish research and development bases in India.
Government officials attribute the investment momentum to improved policy clarity and faster approval mechanisms introduced alongside the PN3 changes. The sustained inflow suggests that foreign investors perceive India's business environment as increasingly competitive, particularly for sectors aligned with the nation's technological development priorities.
