India is poised to enter a new chapter in digital finance with the launch of its first tokenised bond issue, scheduled for September. State-owned Rural Electrification Corporation (REC) will spearhead the pilot programme, issuing blockchain-based securities as part of the government's broader push to modernise capital markets infrastructure.

The tokenised bond offering is expected to be valued at less than Rs 500 crore, making it a modest but symbolically important first step into securities tokenisation. The initiative aligns with Reserve Bank of India and Securities and Exchange Board of India guidelines on digital asset management and aims to demonstrate the viability of blockchain technology in traditional debt markets.

Tokenisation involves converting physical or digital securities into digital tokens on a blockchain network, offering potential benefits including faster settlement, reduced intermediaries, and enhanced transparency. For India's financial ecosystem, the REC pilot could serve as a blueprint for subsequent government and corporate bond issuances using similar technology.

The move reflects India's strategic focus on financial innovation and positions the nation alongside global peers exploring blockchain applications in capital markets. Success of the REC offering could accelerate adoption of tokenised securities across Indian financial markets and attract investor interest in digital asset infrastructure.
