India sets up faceless trade processing unit to ease business for exporters

The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) has announced plans to create a Central Processing Department (CPD) dedicated to handling trade-related applications under a faceless system, according to an official memorandum. The new unit will be housed at the central licensing area in New Delhi and is scheduled for formal dedication during the second fortnight of October 2026.

The faceless trade facilitation initiative represents a significant shift in how the government processes export and import documentation. By removing human interface from the workflow, the system eliminates geographical constraints and enables paperless processing of applications, addressing longstanding concerns about processing delays and inconsistencies in trade administration.

Government officials have emphasized that the centralized processing model will substantially reduce turnaround times for trade permits and licenses while bolstering transparency in decision-making. The approach aligns with broader efforts to improve India's ease of doing business rankings and make the country more competitive for international commerce.

To support the rollout, the DGFT has stationed or transferred 53 officers from its Delhi headquarters and regional offices to the new department. These officials will manage the technical infrastructure and operational aspects of the faceless system during its implementation phase.
