India aims to establish a sports equipment export industry valued at $8.1 billion by 2036, according to targets outlined by NITI Aayog. The goal, discussed at the IAMGAME conclave, hinges on implementing multiple reforms across the manufacturing and logistics landscape.
Industry leaders identified five critical pillars needed to achieve this milestone. These include securing cheaper raw material inputs to improve cost competitiveness, establishing dedicated testing laboratories to ensure quality standards, developing port-linked manufacturing clusters to streamline export logistics, reforming government procurement practices, and fostering closer partnerships with international sports brands.
The sports equipment sector currently remains fragmented, with India's export share lagging far behind established competitors. Participants at the conclave emphasised that achieving the $8.1 billion target requires coordinated action between government agencies, manufacturers, and global stakeholders. Access to affordable inputs and reduced logistics costs emerged as immediate priorities, given the price-sensitive nature of international markets.
Experts noted that port-linked clusters could significantly reduce shipping costs and turnaround times, making Indian products more attractive to global buyers. Simultaneously, stronger ties with multinational brands could open distribution channels and provide technology transfer opportunities. The reforms are expected to position India as a competitive hub in global sports equipment manufacturing within the next decade.
