India Targets Indigenous Jet Engine Development With ₹5,000 Crore Investment

India is pursuing an ambitious programme to design and manufacture an indigenous high-thrust aero-engine as part of its broader push toward defence self-reliance, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said on Tuesday. The government has earmarked approximately ₹5,000 crore for the initiative, which focuses on developing critical aerospace propulsion technology.

Singh emphasized that achieving self-sufficiency in the aerospace sector requires extending indigenous capabilities beyond airframes to include advanced engine technology. The project holds particular significance for India's advanced medium combat aircraft (AMCA) programme, a next-generation fighter jet initiative that requires indigenous high-performance propulsion systems.

The development of a domestic aero-engine would reduce India's dependence on foreign suppliers and enhance strategic autonomy in defence manufacturing. Engine technology represents one of the most challenging and technology-intensive aspects of aircraft development, requiring sustained investment in research, development, and specialized infrastructure.

India has previously undertaken indigenous defence projects including the Light Combat Aircraft (Tejas) and continues to expand its domestic defence industrial base. The aero-engine programme aligns with the government's broader "Make in India" initiative and its commitment to reducing defence imports while strengthening domestic capabilities.
