India targets October 2028 launch of domestically designed smartphone

India is working toward developing its own smartphone brand that would be designed and manufactured domestically, according to an announcement by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. The minister set October 23, 2028, as the target date for the rollout of the indigenously developed device, signaling the government's commitment to reducing dependence on foreign technology giants in the smartphone sector.

The initiative reflects India's broader push for "Make in India" and achieving technological sovereignty in key consumer electronics categories. Currently, the Indian smartphone market is dominated by global players including Apple, Samsung, and Chinese manufacturers, with limited domestic participation in device design and manufacturing.

Vaishnaw's announcement suggests the government is coordinating with Indian industry stakeholders to develop the necessary technological capabilities and manufacturing infrastructure required to produce a competitive smartphone. The project would need to address challenges including semiconductor design expertise, supply chain development, and establishing manufacturing scale.

The 2028 deadline provides a multi-year window for India to develop the requisite technical capabilities and establish production facilities. Success in this endeavor could position India as a significant player in smartphone manufacturing and design, potentially creating new opportunities for domestic technology companies and manufacturing partners.
