India targets seamless toll collection via FASTag by March 2027

India's road transport infrastructure is set for a technological overhaul as the government pursues a barrier-free toll collection system across national highways by March 2027. The transition to complete FASTag implementation marks a significant shift away from traditional toll booth operations toward electronic fee collection.

The Financial Accounting Solution Tags (FASTag) initiative, which employs radio frequency identification technology for automatic toll deduction, has been gaining momentum across India's expressway network. By eliminating physical toll plazas, the system aims to reduce congestion, improve traffic flow, and minimize operational overhead associated with conventional toll collection methods.

Government projections suggest that full FASTag adoption will deliver substantial fiscal advantages, with estimates indicating annual savings of ₹25,000 crore for the state exchequer. These savings are expected to accrue from reduced operational costs, diminished revenue leakage, and improved collection efficiency compared to traditional cash-based systems.

The rollout represents part of a broader modernization push within India's transport sector, aligning infrastructure development with digital payment adoption.
