India tightens SIM card purchase rules with new ownership caps

The telecommunications regulator has revised its SIM card acquisition framework, introducing a cap on the number of connections a single person can maintain across mobile networks. The new rules mark a significant departure from previous policies that allowed individuals to purchase multiple SIM cards under one name without restriction. Under the revised guidelines, subscribers who currently hold SIM cards beyond the newly stipulated limit must initiate deactivation procedures for the excess connections. The regulation, slated for implementation from August 24, applies across all major telecom service providers operating in India. Telecom officials have stated that the move aims to curb misuse of mobile connections while maintaining legitimate consumer access to services. Subscribers are advised to review their existing connections and comply with the new ownership ceiling to avoid service interruption.
