India to establish 10 new drug import gateways to streamline healthcare logistics

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has proposed amendments to Rule 43A of the Drugs Rules, 1945, seeking to designate ten new import gateways for pharmaceutical products and medical devices. The regulatory change is designed to ease current bottlenecks in the importation process and improve the efficiency of healthcare product movement across Indian territories.

Under the existing framework, pharmaceutical and medical device imports are channeled through limited entry points, requiring goods to traverse extended inland distances before reaching their final destinations. The proposed amendments would distribute import operations across multiple gateways, thereby reducing transportation distances and associated logistics costs.

The initiative reflects the government's broader focus on strengthening healthcare infrastructure and ensuring timely availability of medicines and medical devices across the country. By decentralizing import operations, the regulatory framework aims to improve supply chain resilience and reduce delays in product distribution, particularly to remote and underserved regions.

The Ministry has invited stakeholder feedback on the proposed amendments, which would require formal notification before implementation. Industry observers expect the new gateways to enhance operational efficiency for pharmaceutical importers and distributors while potentially lowering costs for healthcare providers and consumers.
