India's Ministry of Coal will commence the 16th round of commercial coal mine auctions on Thursday, offering exploration and development opportunities across multiple blocks. The auction will feature both fully explored and partially explored coal deposits, providing investors with varying risk and operational profiles.
The latest tranche comes with significantly liberalised bidding conditions designed to encourage wider participation. Blocks will be offered without end-use restrictions, allowing successful bidders flexibility in coal utilisation across thermal power generation, industrial applications, and other sectors. This departure from earlier auction frameworks aims to make opportunities more attractive to a broader range of investors.
Foreign direct investment eligibility has been expanded to 100 per cent through the automatic route, removing bureaucratic impediments that previously slowed investment decisions. The move signals the government's commitment to internationalise India's coal sector and leverage global capital for resource development.
The commercial coal auction initiative, launched in 2020, has progressively expanded to create a competitive market for coal mining rights beyond traditional allocations. Previous rounds have attracted significant domestic and international interest, supporting the government's target of achieving self-sufficiency in coal production while reducing import dependence.
