The decennial census, a cornerstone of India's demographic data collection, will commence on January 25, 2027, and continue for five weeks until February 28. The exercise will cover the vast majority of the country's population, providing updated statistics on population size, distribution, and socio-economic characteristics.
Snow-affected regions, primarily in high-altitude areas of northern India, will be excluded from the primary enumeration period due to accessibility and weather-related challenges. Census authorities are expected to conduct supplementary operations in these zones once conditions permit, ensuring comprehensive coverage across the nation.
The Census of India, conducted every ten years, serves as the foundation for policy formulation, resource allocation, and planning across multiple government sectors including health, education, and infrastructure development. The 2027 census will follow the 2011 enumeration and incorporate updated methodologies and digital tools for data collection and processing.
Official agencies are expected to deploy enumerators and conduct preparatory activities in the coming months to ensure smooth implementation across diverse geographical and climatic regions.
