India to launch unified power sector data-sharing framework this month
A standardised digital architecture will consolidate fragmented electricity data across India's power sector. The framework will provide machine-readable datasets and secure APIs for authorised users to access critical information.

India's power secretary announced plans to roll out a comprehensive data-sharing framework designed to bring coherence to the country's historically fragmented electricity infrastructure. The initiative seeks to create a unified digital architecture that will enable seamless information exchange across the power sector, addressing longstanding challenges in data accessibility and standardisation.
The framework will operate through machine-readable datasets and application programming interfaces (APIs), ensuring that authorised stakeholders can access critical power sector information in a structured, secure manner. This technological approach is intended to eliminate silos that have traditionally hindered coordination between utilities, regulators, and government agencies involved in electricity generation, transmission, and distribution.
The systematic consolidation of power data is expected to facilitate better decision-making, improve operational efficiency, and support policy formulation across India's energy landscape. By establishing standardised protocols for data exchange, the framework aims to create a more transparent and integrated power ecosystem.
The power ministry has indicated that the launch timeline for this month reflects the government's commitment to modernising the sector's digital infrastructure. Implementation is expected to progressively integrate various stakeholders within the Indian power system, creating a more cohesive information environment for all participants.
