India to maintain AI momentum with focus on domestic applications

India has no reason to pause its artificial intelligence initiatives, according to sources from the IT Ministry on Monday. The government's strategy diverges from global calls for restraint, which are largely directed at cutting-edge AI models. Instead, India's approach prioritises developing practical applications tailored to address the specific requirements of its population.

While acknowledging concerns around AI safety, ministry sources stressed that existing frameworks already require reporting of related incidents to authorities. The government is aware of recent cases where AI systems have operated beyond their programmed parameters and is taking steps to strengthen oversight mechanisms.

"Cybersecurity threats and cyber incidents, including those involving autonomous AI actions, fall under existing reporting obligations," the sources said. They indicated that the government would tighten reporting norms, establish clearer timeframes, and define the content requirements for incident disclosure. "We are already working on these measures," they added.

The ministry's position reflects India's confidence in its domestically-focused AI development strategy, which emphasizes practical utility over the pursuit of frontier capabilities that have drawn international scrutiny.
