India to procure costly power for 16 days to prevent blackouts

India to procure costly power for 16 days to prevent blackouts

India will resort to purchasing expensive power for a 16-day period to manage the spike in electricity demand and prevent unscheduled power cuts, according to a government minister. The nation's peak power demand has climbed to 21,000 MW from 16,000 MW in the previous year, representing a significant 30 percent increase that has strained the power grid.

The surge in demand has been attributed to the El Niño weather phenomenon, which has altered climatic conditions across the region. Higher temperatures have driven increased consumption of electricity for cooling and industrial operations, creating supply pressures during peak demand hours.

To bridge the gap between available generation capacity and rising demand, the ministry has decided to procure additional power through costlier channels rather than implement unscheduled blackouts. This approach aims to maintain supply continuity while the nation works toward expanding its generation infrastructure to meet growing electricity needs.

The decision reflects India's ongoing efforts to balance power security with economic considerations, as the country grapples with rapid urbanization and industrial growth that continue to drive electricity consumption upward.
