Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) has initiated production readiness activities for the Quick Reaction Surface-to-Air Missile (QRSAM), a homegrown air-defence system developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). The move signals India's commitment to reducing dependence on imported defence systems and strengthening indigenous manufacturing capabilities.
The QRSAM is designed to provide mobile air-defence coverage for army units against airborne threats including aircraft, helicopters, and unmanned aerial vehicles. The system features a 360-degree radar coverage and an effective engagement range of up to 30 kilometres, enabling comprehensive protection across multiple operational scenarios.
The production contract, valued at approximately Rs 30,000 crore, represents a substantial investment in indigenous defence capabilities. BEL's involvement as the designated manufacturer underscores the government's strategy to leverage domestic industry for advanced weapons systems development and production.
The QRSAM system has been developed to meet specific operational requirements of the Indian Army, combining mobility with rapid response capabilities. Once production ramps up, the system is expected to enhance the country's air-defence posture while creating employment opportunities in the defence manufacturing sector.
