India to provide free LPG cylinders, cash assistance to households annually

The government has unveiled a fresh initiative aimed at providing cooking fuel assistance to Indian households, offering three complimentary LPG cylinders annually alongside monetary support. Under the scheme, eligible beneficiaries will receive 3,000 rupees credited directly to their bank accounts each year to help offset fuel costs.

The move represents an expansion of existing fuel subsidy programmes, with officials framing the initiative as part of broader efforts to reduce the burden of essential commodity expenses on household budgets. The direct cash transfer component is designed to provide flexibility to beneficiaries in managing their energy expenses.

Applications for the scheme will commence from September 5, with the government expected to announce detailed eligibility criteria and application procedures through official channels. State-level authorities and the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas are coordinating implementation across the country.

The announcement comes amid ongoing efforts by the government to cushion citizens from volatile global energy prices while promoting the use of cleaner cooking fuels. Officials have emphasised the scheme's role in supporting lower-income households and ensuring equitable access to essential energy resources across urban and rural areas.
