India to raise wheat MSP by Rs 25 to Rs 2,610 per quintal

The Cabinet has cleared a Rs 25 per quintal increase in wheat's minimum support price (MSP) for the 2027-28 rabi marketing year, raising it to Rs 2,610 per quintal from Rs 2,585 in the previous season, sources confirmed on Wednesday following a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The decision follows recommendations from the Commission for Agricultural Costs & Prices (CACP), which proposed the nominal hike after assessing production costs, El Niño weather patterns, and global and domestic commodity price movements. The increase reflects the government's cautious approach to MSP adjustments amid broader economic considerations.
The agriculture ministry has established a wheat production target of 121 million tonnes for the 2026-27 crop year (July-June), underscoring the significance of the support pricing mechanism for the nation's food security. Wheat remains India's primary rabi, or winter, crop, with sowing typically commencing in October and harvesting beginning in April, making MSP announcements critical for farmers planning their cultivation schedules.
