India to revamp Krishi Vigyan Kendra pay scales and infrastructure

The Finance Ministry has cleared a proposal from the Agriculture Ministry to restructure pay scales, allowances and advancement criteria for personnel working at Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs), the government's network of agricultural extension centres. Under the new arrangement, state governments will assume responsibility for funding National Pension System contributions and retirement benefits for KVK staff members.

Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan reviewed the overhaul during a meeting on Monday, framing the initiative as part of a wider effort to enhance the effectiveness of KVKs in delivering agricultural support services. The minister emphasised that successful implementation depends on robust coordination between central and state authorities, coupled with adequate budget allocation and timely infrastructure upgrades.

Chouhan highlighted the need for KVKs to be adequately equipped with modern facilities, sufficient personnel and institutional support to serve farming communities effectively. The minister stressed that these improvements are essential as the sector grapples with evolving challenges in agricultural production and sustainability. The revamp aims to ensure KVKs remain relevant in supporting farmers across the country's diverse agro-climatic zones and farming systems.
