India to roll out unified electricity data-sharing framework soon

India's power sector is set to get a unified data-sharing architecture as the ministry prepares to launch national electricity data norms in the coming period. The standardised digital framework will address the challenge of fragmented datasets that currently hinder coordinated operations across India's power distribution and generation landscape.

According to the power secretary, the proposed norms will establish protocols for secure data access and interoperability across the electricity ecosystem. This includes utilities, generators, regulators, and technology providers who operate across different states and regions with varying systems and standards.

The initiative is designed to enable wider adoption of artificial intelligence and data analytics tools within the power sector. By creating a common digital architecture, stakeholders will be able to share information more efficiently, leading to better grid management, demand forecasting, and operational efficiency.

The framework comes as India seeks to modernise its power infrastructure amid rapid growth in renewable energy generation and increasing electrification demands. Standardised data protocols are expected to facilitate better coordination between central and state authorities, improve transparency in electricity supply chains, and support the integration of distributed energy resources into the national grid.

Details regarding the timeline for implementation and specific technical standards are expected to be announced as the framework moves closer to launch.
