India to shift 60 motor vehicle services to Aadhaar-OTP authentication

India's Ministry of Road Transport and Highways will implement Aadhaar-OTP based authentication for 60 motor vehicle department services, marking a significant shift toward digital-first citizen engagement. The transition takes effect from September 21, making services accessible entirely through online platforms without requiring in-person visits to government offices.

The services covered under this initiative span two key government portals: Vahan, which handles vehicle-related registrations and documentation, and Sarathi, which manages driving license applications and renewals. By leveraging Aadhaar's one-time password system, the government aims to enhance security while simplifying the verification process for citizens accessing these frequently-used services.

The move represents part of India's broader digitalization agenda for public services. By eliminating geographical and temporal barriers associated with physical office visits, the initiative is expected to reduce processing times and enhance transparency. Citizens will be able to complete vehicle registrations, license renewals, and related administrative tasks from any location with internet access.
