India to streamline visa system, cutting categories nearly in half

India's Home Ministry is set to implement a comprehensive restructuring of its visa classification system, consolidating multiple categories to create a more efficient approval process. The streamlining exercise will reduce the total number of visa categories from 13 to nine, while simultaneously cutting sub-categories from 49 to 23, according to ministry officials.

A key component of the modernisation drive involves simplifying application documentation requirements. The ministry will eliminate approximately 70 per cent of fields currently mandated in visa application forms, reducing bureaucratic burden on both applicants and processing officials. This reduction in paperwork is expected to expedite clearance timelines across all visa categories.

The overhaul reflects the government's broader push to enhance India's appeal as a destination for tourism, business, and skilled migration while maintaining robust security screening mechanisms. By standardising and consolidating visa categories, authorities aim to reduce processing delays and administrative complexities that have historically characterised India's visa regime.

The simplified framework is expected to benefit international visitors, business professionals, students, and workers seeking to travel to India. Officials indicated that the restructuring would maintain security safeguards while making the visa acquisition process more transparent and user-friendly for applicants from all nations.
