India to tighten e-commerce rules on pricing and product rankings

India is set to impose comprehensive new regulations on e-commerce platforms to strengthen consumer protections and ensure greater marketplace transparency. The amended rules, effective from January 1, 2027, will mandate that online shopping websites disclose previous prices of products, enabling consumers to verify genuine discounts and avoid misleading promotional claims.

Under the new framework, e-commerce platforms must clearly identify sponsored listings and paid promotional content, distinguishing them from organic search results and recommendations. This measure addresses longstanding consumer concerns about obscured advertising on major shopping websites and helps shoppers distinguish between paid placements and unbiased product rankings.

The regulations will also require platforms to display comprehensive seller and product information in a standardized format. Consumers will have access to enhanced details about merchants, including verification credentials and ratings, alongside detailed product specifications and authenticity certifications where applicable.

These amendments represent a significant shift toward stricter regulatory oversight of the e-commerce sector in India. The changes align with broader consumer protection initiatives aimed at curbing unfair market practices and ensuring that online shopping platforms operate with greater accountability and transparency.

Industry stakeholders have been given over a year to prepare for implementation. The regulations are expected to reshape how major e-commerce players present products and conduct business, potentially affecting pricing strategies, platform algorithms, and marketing practices across the sector.
