The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) on Thursday announced the launch of three sovereign AI models developed by homegrown technology laboratories, marking a significant step in India's push to develop indigenous artificial intelligence infrastructure.

The models were developed by Soket Labs Technology and Research and ZenteiQ AiTech Innovations, two Indian AI research institutions. The initiative is part of the broader IndiaAI Mission, which aims to position India as a leader in artificial intelligence development and deployment across various sectors.

The sovereign AI models represent efforts to reduce India's dependence on foreign AI systems and create technology solutions tailored to Indian languages, cultural contexts, and regional requirements. Developing domestic AI capabilities is seen as critical for maintaining data sovereignty and ensuring technology decisions align with national priorities.

The IndiaAI Mission encompasses initiatives to strengthen AI research infrastructure, support startups, and foster collaboration between government, academia, and industry. Government officials have emphasized the importance of building AI systems that can address India-specific challenges in healthcare, agriculture, education, and governance.

The launch reflects growing global competition in artificial intelligence development, with nations worldwide prioritizing the creation of homegrown AI systems to support economic growth and technological self-reliance.
