India-US trade negotiations moving toward resolution, says Jaishankar

India and the United States are edging closer to finalizing a trade agreement, with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar describing negotiations as heading toward a "landing point." Speaking at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum, Jaishankar indicated that both nations continue to engage constructively despite outstanding differences, while emphasizing that the broader strategic partnership between the two countries remains on solid ground.

Jaishankar's optimistic assessment came more than a week after Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman characterized the trade talks as having reached a "plateau," suggesting a period of consolidation rather than stalled progress. The external affairs minister declined to provide details about the negotiations, stating he was uncomfortable discussing specifics publicly at this stage.

Trade officials from both countries are actively working to resolve remaining issues. India's Commerce Minister, the U.S. Trade Representative, and other senior officials have been engaged in talks aimed at advancing the bilateral trade pact. According to Jaishankar, such complex negotiations with a major economy like the United States require careful consideration of multiple factors and strategic interests.

The push toward conclusion of a trade deal reflects both nations' commitment to deepening economic ties, even as they navigate differences on key issues. Officials on both sides are expected to continue discussions in coming weeks as they work toward achieving an agreement.
