India, Uzbekistan elevate diplomatic ties to comprehensive strategic partnership

India and Uzbekistan have decided to elevate their bilateral relationship to a comprehensive strategic partnership, marking a significant step in deepening ties between the two nations. The decision was formalized during delegation-level talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, signaling a shared commitment to broadening cooperation across multiple sectors.

The two leaders identified key areas for enhanced collaboration, including trade and investment, critical minerals sourcing, and defence and security cooperation. The discussions underscored the importance of economic partnerships in strengthening regional stability and prosperity in Central and South Asia.

Digital infrastructure emerged as a notable area of focus, with both nations exploring the expansion of India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and other fintech initiatives in Uzbekistan. The move reflects India's growing emphasis on exporting digital public infrastructure solutions to partner nations in the region.

The upgraded partnership framework is expected to facilitate greater people-to-people exchanges, academic collaboration, and cultural ties. Officials indicated that both countries would work toward formalizing the new arrangement through institutional mechanisms and regular high-level engagement.
