India's foreign exchange reserves experienced a remarkable surge of $44.9 billion during the week, marking a significant milestone that elevated the country to the fourth-largest forex holder worldwide. The sharp weekly increase reflects strong inflows and demonstrates India's growing economic strength in the global financial landscape.
The substantial accumulation of foreign currency assets underscores India's robust external sector performance. This positioning among the world's top forex reserve holders provides the country with enhanced financial stability and greater capacity to manage external vulnerabilities.
However, the growth in overall reserves was partially offset by a decline in gold holdings. India's gold reserves decreased by $2.59 billion to $113.81 billion during the same period, as gold prices declined 0.56 per cent to settle at $4,429 per ounce. The softening in gold prices contributed to the reduction in the value of these precious metal holdings despite the overall strength in forex accumulation.
The record weekly increase in foreign exchange reserves reflects positive sentiment around India's external accounts and the country's ability to attract foreign capital. The reserves serve as a crucial buffer against external shocks and provide the Reserve Bank of India with enhanced flexibility in managing currency and monetary policy matters.
