India, WFP tackle humanitarian challenges amid shifting global landscape

India and the World Food Programme (WFP) discussed pressing challenges confronting humanitarian efforts during high-level talks held on the margins of the UN General Assembly in New York. Sibi George, Secretary (West) at the Ministry of External Affairs, met with Carl Skau, Acting Executive Director of the WFP, to exchange views on the complex global landscape and its impact on relief operations.

The meeting underscored India's commitment to engaging with multilateral agencies on humanitarian concerns at a time when global crises continue to strain resources and operational capacity. The two sides reviewed the evolving geopolitical dynamics that shape humanitarian intervention strategies and access to affected populations.

The WFP, which operates food assistance programmes across conflict-affected and disaster-prone regions, faces mounting pressures from climate-related shocks, economic instability, and protracted conflicts. India, as a major contributor to UN agencies and an active participant in humanitarian initiatives, maintains regular dialogue with international organizations to coordinate responses to humanitarian emergencies.

The UNGA sidelines provided an opportune forum for both parties to align on shared priorities and explore avenues for enhanced cooperation in addressing food security and humanitarian needs in vulnerable regions, particularly across South and Southeast Asia.
