Indian airlines seek government relief as Middle East tensions spike costs

India's three largest airlines are pressing the government for emergency relief measures as rising tensions in the Middle East drive up fuel costs and operational expenses across the aviation sector. The Federation of Indian Airlines (FIA), which represents Air India, IndiGo and SpiceJet, has raised concerns about the financial strain on carriers navigating volatile energy markets and elevated security expenses.

The West Asia situation has created headwinds for Indian carriers already contending with narrow profit margins and intense domestic competition. Airlines face increased costs for fuel surcharges, re-routing of flights, and heightened security measures in response to regional instability. These expenses ultimately threaten the financial viability of services connecting India to key Middle Eastern markets.

The FIA is advocating for targeted government intervention, including fuel subsidies or tax exemptions to help offset the additional burden. Industry representatives argue that without relief, carriers may be forced to pass increased costs to passengers through higher ticket prices, potentially dampening demand during a critical growth phase for Indian aviation.

The request comes as airlines globally grapple with similar challenges stemming from Middle East tensions. Indian carriers, which depend heavily on Middle Eastern routes for connecting flights and revenue, are particularly vulnerable to sustained disruptions in the region. Government support is viewed as essential to maintaining competitive capacity and protecting employment across the sector.
