Indian-American firm to develop $8.2bn deepwater LNG port in Texas

The US Maritime Administration has fast-tracked approval for ST LNG to build a deepwater liquefied natural gas port approximately 10.4 miles offshore Matagorda, Texas, at an estimated cost of $8.2 billion. US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced the approval this week, highlighting the administration's commitment to streamlining infrastructure development. The licensing process was completed within 410 days—significantly faster than the typical five-year timeline—through an expedited environmental review.

Construction on the facility is scheduled to begin in 2027, with full operational status targeted for 2029. Once fully operational, the port will comprise 20 offshore platforms, four liquefied natural gas floating storage units, four mooring systems, and approximately 7.7 miles of subsea pipeline infrastructure. The facility represents one of the largest private infrastructure projects initiated in recent years.

Beyond its commercial significance, the project is designed to enhance maritime safety and operational efficiency. By relocating vessel traffic away from congested onshore areas, the deepwater port is expected to reduce the frequency of vessel collisions and mitigate associated safety risks. The facility's offshore location also allows for greater flexibility in handling large LNG tankers, which increasingly dominate global energy trade.
