Indian Army clarifies video shows Chinese commercial vehicles, not military intrusion

The Indian Army issued a statement on Monday clarifying the contents of a video that had circulated online, alleging Chinese military intrusion at Nathu La Pass in Sikkim. The Army said the original footage shows JAC-branded commercial vehicles at the sensitive border location, rejecting interpretations that characterized the images as evidence of a security breach.

Nathu La Pass, situated at an altitude of 4,310 meters on the India-China border in East Sikkim, has been a point of friction between the two nations, particularly following the 2017 Doklam standoff and subsequent border tensions. The pass serves as a trade route and has been subject to heightened scrutiny by both countries.

The Army's clarification aims to counter what it describes as a "misleading narrative" surrounding the video. Officials emphasized that the presence of commercial vehicles from a Chinese automotive manufacturer does not constitute a military incursion or violation of existing border protocols.

The statement underscores ongoing concerns about misinformation regarding India-China border activities. Both nations have in recent years faced challenges with unverified claims about border movements being amplified through social media platforms. The Army's proactive response reflects efforts to maintain transparency and prevent potential escalation stemming from misinterpretation of border activities.
