The Indian Army has categorically denied widespread claims circulating on social media that China has captured 50 kilometres of land in Arunachal Pradesh, calling the allegations part of a coordinated disinformation campaign.
According to the Army, the false narrative was deliberately spread through multiple X (formerly Twitter) handles as part of what it described as a Pakistan-backed effort to sow confusion and undermine public confidence. The military dismissed the claims as baseless and part of a larger pattern of coordinated misinformation.
The viral posts had claimed significant territorial incursions by Chinese forces in the northeastern state, but the Army's response suggests no such seizure has occurred. Officials emphasized that such major territorial changes would be closely monitored and would constitute a significant military development warranting official acknowledgment.
The incident highlights growing concerns about organized disinformation campaigns targeting defence and national security issues in South Asia. Authorities have increasingly noted how social media platforms can be weaponized to spread false narratives about border disputes and military matters, potentially causing unnecessary alarm among the public.
India and China have maintained a tense border standoff in multiple areas of the frontier, with periodic skirmishes reported along the Line of Actual Control. However, military and government sources maintain regular channels to address any genuine territorial concerns.
