The Indian Army has rolled out the Bharat Rice initiative, a targeted procurement strategy designed to streamline food supply operations across its command structure. Under the new framework, rice will be delivered directly to designated supply depots, ensuring consistent availability in key operational areas.
The move follows a memorandum of understanding signed between the Army and the Food Corporation of India (FCI), which outlines enhanced collaboration on logistics infrastructure. The agreement grants the military access to FCI's warehousing facilities, trained manpower, and material-handling equipment, provisions that are expected to prove particularly valuable during contingency operations.
The initiative addresses long-standing challenges in provisioning troops stationed in remote and strategically sensitive regions. By leveraging FCI's established network and resources, the Army aims to reduce supply chain delays and ensure consistent food quality across its formations.
The Bharat Rice programme underscores the armed forces' focus on self-reliance in operational logistics. Defence officials have emphasized that the arrangement strengthens India's internal supply chain capabilities while reducing dependence on external procurement channels.
