Indian Army launches cyber labs to secure military systems and drones

The Indian Army is moving to bolster the security of its critical defence infrastructure by establishing a network of specialised cyber security laboratories across the country. The initiative focuses on identifying and eliminating foreign-origin vulnerabilities, or 'bugs', embedded in drones and military systems that could potentially be exploited by adversaries.

With one facility already operational in the national capital, the army plans to establish five additional labs as part of a broader cyber security hardening programme. The move is part of increased efforts to mitigate risks posed by potential security threats originating from specific foreign sources.

The cyber laboratories will serve as dedicated testing and verification centres, allowing military personnel to scan equipment and software for hidden vulnerabilities before deployment. This proactive approach aims to prevent potential compromise of sensitive defence systems and ensure the integrity of mission-critical platforms.

The initiative underscores growing concerns within India's defence establishment about supply chain security and the need for indigenous capability to audit and validate military technology. As India expands its use of autonomous systems and connected defence platforms, securing these assets against external interference has become a strategic priority.

The establishment of these facilities represents a significant step towards self-reliance in defence cyber security, reducing dependence on external validation and enhancing the country's ability to protect classified military operations from digital threats.
