The lender's move to set up operations in the emirate comes as it looks to leverage the substantial presence of non-resident Indians across West Asia. Dubai alone is home to a large concentration of Indian professionals and entrepreneurs, with approximately one-third of the emirate's working population comprising Indian nationals.
The bank's board has cleared the proposal for the Dubai representative office, with the institution now pursuing necessary regulatory approvals from relevant authorities in India and the UAE. The expansion aligns with Indian Bank's broader strategy to strengthen its international presence and tap into cross-border banking opportunities.
Indian Bank currently maintains a footprint across South and Southeast Asia, operating a full-service international branch in Singapore and branches in Colombo and Jaffna in Sri Lanka. The bank also runs an IFSC Banking Unit from GIFT City in Gandhinagar, which has emerged as a significant revenue contributor, particularly through participation in syndicated lending arrangements.
According to the bank's managing director and chief executive officer Binod Kumar, the Dubai representative office is expected to unlock fresh business opportunities by serving the Indian diaspora and facilitating banking ties between India and the Gulf region. The bank is simultaneously exploring additional international expansion possibilities to strengthen its global banking capabilities.
