Indian Bank upgrades FY27 growth outlook amid ECL provisioning

Indian Bank has lifted its growth projections for the financial year ending March 2027, signalling confidence in credit expansion despite heightened provisioning requirements under new regulatory frameworks.

The lender expects advances to expand between 13% and 14% during FY27, while deposit growth is pegged at 11-12%, according to the bank's latest guidance. These growth targets reflect the bank's strategy to balance loan book expansion with prudent liability management in a competitive banking environment.

To cushion against potential credit stress, Indian Bank has set aside ₹2,500 crore thus far under the expected credit loss (ECL) framework. The bank has separately quantified the full-year ECL impact at ₹3,500 crore, indicating a cautious approach to credit quality amid evolving macroeconomic conditions.

The ECL provisioning framework represents a shift toward frontloaded loss recognition, requiring banks to assess potential credit deterioration across their portfolio. Indian Bank's provisioning stance reflects the banking sector's broader effort to strengthen balance sheets and maintain capital adequacy ratios amid regulatory expectations.

The revised growth guidance comes as public sector banks navigate mounting pressures from slowing credit demand and competitive deposit pricing. Indian Bank's projections suggest the lender remains positioned to expand its market share while maintaining asset quality standards in a challenging operating environment.
