Indian banks tap dollar bond markets, raise $3bn in 10 days

Indian banks have demonstrated robust access to international capital markets, mobilising over $3 billion through US dollar bond offerings within a 10-day window, market participants said. The fundraising activity reflects strong investor confidence in Indian lenders and favourable conditions created by the Reserve Bank of India's concessional foreign exchange swap facility.

The RBI's swap window, which allows banks to access cheaper dollar funding, has catalysed increased issuance activity in the international bond markets. The facility has effectively lowered the cost of dollar borrowing for Indian financial institutions, making external fundraising more attractive compared to domestic alternatives.

Year-to-date figures underscore the scale of the trend. Indian banks have raised a record $10 billion through dollar bond markets since the beginning of 2026, with market observers indicating additional issuances are in the pipeline as long as the RBI's concessional window remains accessible.

The heightened activity suggests Indian lenders are capitalising on favourable global funding conditions while the RBI's supportive policy stance is in place. Analysts note the trend reflects both strong market demand for Indian bank paper and strategic timing by issuers to lock in competitive borrowing costs. Further issuances are expected as banks continue to diversify their funding sources.
