A consortium of nine Indian banks is working to introduce a new service that will enable customers to obtain debit and credit cards from automated teller machines, marking a significant shift in card delivery mechanisms. State Bank of India is among the leading institutions participating in the initiative, which aims to streamline the card issuance process for bank customers nationwide.
Under the new system, ATM users will be able to generate and collect their debit or credit cards on-demand rather than waiting for physical cards to be mailed to their registered addresses. The technology is currently under development and is expected to be deployed across participating banks' ATM networks in the coming months.
The move represents an effort by Indian financial institutions to enhance customer convenience and reduce the time taken for card activation. By enabling instant card issuance at ATMs, banks aim to provide immediate access to credit and debit facilities while simultaneously reducing operational costs associated with traditional card printing and delivery logistics.
The initiative is part of broader efforts within India's banking sector to modernize customer-facing services and leverage existing ATM infrastructure for expanded functionality beyond cash withdrawals.
