Nishikant Dubey, a Member of Parliament from India's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has made controversial remarks asserting claims over several regions within Bangladesh and Pakistan-administered territory. His statement included references to Noakhali, the Chittagong Port area, and the Sylhet region, all of which are integral parts of present-day Bangladesh.
The remarks underscore persistent territorial assertions that occasionally emerge from sections of India's political establishment, despite official diplomatic relations between India and Bangladesh. Such statements, typically rooted in historical narratives predating the 1947 partition and subsequent creation of Bangladesh in 1971, have periodically strained bilateral relations in South Asia.
The Indian government has not officially endorsed such territorial claims, maintaining formal diplomatic recognition of Bangladesh's borders. However, statements by individual lawmakers occasionally highlight the complex historical grievances and competing nationalist narratives that persist within Indian political circles.
Bangladesh's Foreign Ministry has not yet issued an official response to the remarks. Relations between the two nations have generally remained stable in recent years, despite occasional disagreements over border security and bilateral trade matters.
