Citizenship renunciations by Indians have accelerated dramatically over the past ten years, rising 57 percent as an increasing number of nationals pursue permanent settlement abroad. The surge underscores a significant shift in migration patterns, with hundreds of thousands of Indian citizens formally relinquishing their ties to their homeland in favor of new nationalities.
Between 2015 and 2022, the rate of renunciations nearly doubled, according to recent data analysis. The United States emerged as the most popular destination for Indians acquiring citizenship, followed closely by Canada and Australia. These three nations have long attracted Indian migrants through skilled immigration pathways and established diaspora communities.
The exodus reflects several factors driving emigration from India, including employment opportunities, quality of life considerations, and educational prospects in developed nations. Immigration to these countries has been facilitated by demand for skilled professionals in technology, healthcare, and engineering sectors, where Indian nationals have historically maintained a strong presence.
The trend carries implications for India's demographic composition and brain drain concerns, as educated professionals increasingly opt for permanent settlement overseas. However, many Indians retain dual status through Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) provisions, allowing them to maintain some connection with their country of origin even after formal citizenship renunciation.
