Indian city issues ultimatum to 6 lakh property owners over tax arrears
A municipal corporation has set a September 30 deadline for over 600,000 property owners to settle outstanding property tax dues totalling ₹847 crore. The action affects roughly 43 per cent of the city's registered property owners who have failed to clear their arrears.

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has directed property owners with outstanding tax liabilities to clear their dues within the stipulated timeframe or face potential consequences. Of the city's 14.15 lakh registered property owners, approximately 8.12 lakh have maintained current payment status without arrears, leaving a significant portion of the taxpayer base in default.
The outstanding amount of ₹847 crore represents a substantial revenue shortfall for the municipal body, which depends on property tax collections to fund civic infrastructure and services across the city. The September 30 deadline is intended to provide property owners with a reasonable window to settle their obligations.
Property tax arrears have long been a challenge for municipal corporations across India, with a portion of registered owners either unable or unwilling to maintain regular payment schedules. The GCC's move reflects efforts to improve tax compliance and strengthen the corporation's financial position.
Propertyty owners are advised to approach the GCC offices to verify their outstanding dues and make payments before the deadline expires. The corporation typically imposes penalties and interest on overdue payments, and prolonged default can result in further action including attachment of properties or denial of civic services.
