Indian coworking sector surges 68% as firms embrace flexible workspaces

Coworking centre operators leased 191,306 desks across major Indian cities during January-June, up sharply from 113,623 in the corresponding six-month period last year, according to data from real estate consultancy Cushman & Wakefield.

The surge reflects a broader shift among Indian corporates toward flexible workspace arrangements that offer operational flexibility without long-term commitments. Companies are increasingly moving away from traditional leasing models to adopt managed office solutions provided by coworking operators.

Bengaluru maintained its position as the leading coworking hub, with operators leasing 57,487 desks in the first half of the year, a 32 percent increase from 43,616 desks in the year-ago period. Hyderabad emerged as a growth star, with leasing more than doubling to 40,451 desks from 14,936 units in the preceding year. Mumbai also recorded strong growth, with 25,820 desks leased during the same period.

The expansion underscores the growing appeal of flexible workspace solutions among businesses of varying sizes, from startups to established enterprises seeking to optimize real estate costs and workforce flexibility.
