Indian diaspora group warns against H-1B restrictions that may impair US innovation

The Foundation for India and Indian Diaspora Studies (FIIDS) has expressed qualified support for enhanced scrutiny of H-1B visa applications, even as it warned against measures that could compromise the United States' technological leadership.

The statement follows recent executive action by US President Donald Trump to strengthen oversight of the visa programme, which the administration argues has been exploited by certain employers, particularly IT outsourcing firms. "FIIDS appreciates and understands the Administration's intent to protect America's national and economic interests, safeguard American workers, and address abuse of the H-1B program," said Khanderao Kand, Chief of Policy and Strategy at FIIDS.

However, the group emphasized that the US economy relies heavily on importing specialized talent to fill gaps that cannot be immediately addressed by the domestic labour market. Kand underscored that America's position as the world's leading innovation economy is fundamentally tied to its capacity to attract exceptional global talent, particularly in fields requiring advanced expertise.

The H-1B programme, which allows US companies to employ foreign workers in specialty occupations, has long been subject to debate. Proponents argue it is essential for sectors facing skills shortages, while critics contend it displaces American workers and depresses wages. FIIDS's position reflects the delicate balance sought by diaspora stakeholders between protecting domestic employment and maintaining access to international expertise.
