Indian employers accelerate festive hiring, plan longer worker retention

Recruitment momentum is building across India as employers prepare for the busy festive months. According to a recent survey, nearly seven in 10 employers have already commenced or intend to begin festive-season hiring by September, indicating an earlier-than-typical push to expand their workforces ahead of peak consumer demand.

The early hiring drive reflects employer confidence in business prospects during the festival season, traditionally a strong period for retail, e-commerce, hospitality and logistics sectors. Companies are competing to secure talent early, recognizing that the pool of available workers can tighten as the festive period approaches.

A notable trend emerging from the survey is employer commitment to workforce stability beyond the seasonal peak. Three-quarters of surveyed employers expect to retain at least 10% of their seasonal hires even after the festive rush concludes. This reflects a broader shift in hiring strategy, with companies looking to build more durable teams rather than treating seasonal workers as entirely temporary.

The retention outlook suggests employers value the productivity gains and operational continuity that come from retaining trained workers. For workers, this signals improved prospects for extended employment opportunities that extend beyond the traditional seasonal employment window, particularly in sectors facing persistent labour shortages.
